Mary Ronell is a country girl raised in a small rural agriculture town known as Kerman. She moved to Fresno in 1971 and started a career with the IRS as a clerk at the Fresno campus. In 1977 she was promoted to Tax Auditor in San Jose because of her drive and dedication. She worked in San Jose for two years before moving back to Fresno as a Tax Auditor Group Manager. In June 2001, success struck again and she was selected to be Stakeholder Partnership Education and Communication Relationship Manager (SPEC). Her responsibility was to leverage the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistant) program to non-profit organizations in the Central valley. In 2005, Mary and United Way Fresno and Madera Counties established a partnership for the organization to run the VITA program in Fresno and Madera counties. After 40 years with the Internal Revenue Service, Mary retired to enjoy the sweeter things of life.
Much to her surprise the retirement was short lived. Three months later she began working part time at United Way as the VITA Project Lead. This job has given her the opportunity to meet and work with new partners in the community to establish new VITA sites. Mary enjoys working with the volunteers and seeing them grow in confidence with the tax preparation process. She likes to educate and help the taxpayers understand the tax laws and feels rewarded to see the relief on their faces during a time most people dread. Mary takes a complex situation and makes it that much more easy for clients to understand and comprehend.
Mary loves to spend quality time with her three daughters, son and grandchildren taking trips to Disneyland or to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Her passion is cooking and making family favorites like chili rellenos, chicken mole and spaghetti. In her spare time you may catch her curled up on the couch watching classic movies on Turner Classic Movie channel (TCM) or listening to music and dancing. And if that wasn’t enough Mary and her sister have seen 3 movie stars while taking a vacation cruise; Mickey Rooney, Margaret O’Brien and her favorite Debbie Reynolds. Something others only dream of happening to them.
